CIBS Blues Crier :: OCTOBER 2018

OCTOBER 2018

Upcoming Central Iowa Blues Society Events

SATURDAY – OCT 13, 2018 @ 8:00PM
Noce, 1326 Walnut St, DM
Grand Marquis

DOORS AT 7PM // SHOW AT 8PM
Steeped in the musical tradition of Kansas City, Grand Marquis plays American Roots, Blues and Prohibition-Era Jazz. Formed in 1998, Grand Marquis has become solidly rooted in the Kansas City music scene as one of the hardest-working bands in the region, playing over 100 shows per year! The group has performed from coast to coast, released seven albums, including a 7: 45 RPM vinyl record/cd combo recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis. The Grand Marquis are consistently finding themselves in high demand. Learn more about Grand Marquis at www.grandmarquis.net.

Presented by Central Iowa Blues Society and Noce

SUNDAY – OCT 14, 2018 @ 6:00PM
Hawkeye Elks Lodge, 1401 Walker St, Des Moines, IA
Halfway to Hall of Fame Concert & Jam

DOORS AT 5PM // SHOW AT 6PM — $15 Non-members ($10 for CIBS or Elks Members). The first ever IBHOF Halfway to Hall of Fame Concert & Jam. This event was organized to showcase current Iowa Blues Hall of Fame inductees at a halfway mark to the next induction ceremony.

We will also be celebrating an updated Iowa Blues Hall of Fame exhibit!  The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame exhibit was recently relocated to a prominent location within the Hawkeye Elks Lodge, with improved lighting and a new, distinctive sign.

Currently home to 69 members, the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and originally housed at Blues on Grand until its closing in 2010. The exhibit was rededicated in its new home at the Hawkeye Elks Lodge in September 2014.  New inductees are selected periodically by the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame committee and honored at a celebratory awards ceremony.

The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, its mission to recognize, honor and celebrate Iowa Blues heritage, has gone through a rebirth of sorts since languishing after the closure of the popular Blues on Grand.  The induction awards ceremony has steadily grown in recent years with multiple sell-outs, prompting a move to River Center Eventorium for more event space in 2019. The current upgrade gives the exhibit a clean, professional look worthy of a hall of fame. The Hawkeye Elks Lodge is open to the public and your visit is welcomed!

SUNDAY – OCT 21, 2018 @ 7:00PM
Lefty’s Live Music, 2307 University Ave, DM
Blues Caravan • Zito • Venable • Allison

DOORS AT 6PM // SHOW AT 7PM
This is no ordinary club tour… this is Ruf Records Blues Caravan 2018 featuring Bernard Allison, Mike Zito, and Vanja Sky! If you’ve followed Ruf’s rolling revue since it started life in 2005, you already know that these shows are must-see events, throwing together three stellar artists on one bill – then letting the chemistry do the rest.

Traditionally, the Blues Caravan lineup has showcased the label’s breaking talent giving fans a chance to catch the blues titans of tomorrow before they go ‘BOOM’. But in 2018, it’s time to mix things up. On this year’s Blues Caravan, you’ll not only find one young gun with a dazzling career ahead of her, but also two heavyweights with a sky-high reputation.

Ruf’s tireless dedication to the blues means it hunts far beyond borders for its new signings – and the label has struck gold with Lone Star State Powerhouse Ally Venable. Ally Venable, started singing at an early age in church and then in recent years picked up the guitar and found her passion establishing herself as a Texas Blues Guitar Slinger.

Some surnames command instant respect on the blues scene. As the son of the mighty Luther Allison – the late Chicago blues titan who was Ruf’s first signing back in 1994 – Bernard Allison has added to the family legend and carved out his own mythology as a world-class songwriter and performer. For this year’s Blues Caravan, he’ll be drawing on an acclaimed back catalogue that includes 1997’s US debut Keepin’ The Blues Alive and 2000’s classic Born With The Blues, and slipping between genres as only a master can. “I’m looking forward to being a part of the Caravan,” says Bernard. “My show is all about sharing my musical talent and presenting different styles like blues, rock and funk. There’ll be lots of energy, because I feed off of my fans and love interacting with them on and off stage. You can expect a fun time – the Allison way!”

If you’re remotely serious about modern blues, you’ll have followed the twists and turns of Mike Zito’s fascinating career. The Missouri-born bandleader overcame his crippling early addictions to become one of modern America’s sharpest songwriters, and few artists have written with such stark eloquence as he did on 2011’s Greyhound album. In 2012, Mike threw us a curveball, lining up alongside Devon Allman and Cyril Neville as a key member of Royal Southern Brotherhood – and went on to stay with the supergroup for two critically feted albums. But the call of his own muse was too strong, and in 2014, Mike burst straight back into his solo career with Keep Coming Back and Make Blues Not War. “I have long wanted to join the Blues Caravan and run away, so I’m excited,” he says. “My shows are energetic and passionate: I try hard to give everything I’ve got and make every note count. You can expect rocking blues guitar, with a dose of soul vocals, and a mix of my best songs.”

Iowa Blues Hall of Fame Renovation

The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame exhibit has a new look!  A collaborative effort between the Central Iowa Blues Society (CIBS) and Hawkeye Elks Lodge, the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame was recently relocated to a prominent location within the Lodge, with improved lighting and a new, distinctive Hall of Fame sign.

To celebrate this fresh new look, CIBS has announced the inaugural Halfway to the Hall of Fame Concert and Jam on October 14, 2018 at the Hawkeye Elks Lodge located at 1401 Walker Street in Des Moines. The event will be hosted by Iowa Blues Hall of Fame member Steve E. George and his band the Groove with a jam to follow. The event is $15 for non-members ($10 for CIBS and Elks Members). Doors open at 5pm and the show starts at 6pm.

2018 Iowa Blues Challenge Participants

Avey/Grouws Duo  (4:30-4:55) – Solo/Duo

The Avey/Grouws Duo hits hard with a soul for Blues, Americana and Roots. As the 5-piece Avey/Grouws Band, Chris Avey (Quad Cities) and Jeni Grouws (Decorah) were thrilled to represent Iowa at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this January. Making it to the Semi Finals, they lost out to the winners of the IBC, the Keeshea Pratt Band. But still they felt they’d won. The experience and the response helped focus Avey/Grouws on finding their sound and creating their own space in the world of blues music. As an acoustic group, the Avey/Grouws Duo hits their stride, using their style and their songwriting to create music that is gritty, intimate and straight to the heart. They couldn’t be more excited to be back with so many great Iowa musicians.

Freight Train Frank  (5:05-5:30) – Solo/Duo

“Freight Train Frank” Strong has been performing Blues for many years. Frank is motivated to play like the Blues masters of old. The sound of a guitar and harmonica along with sincere vocals will release the powerful emotion of the Blues. Frank has performed with many Blues musicians, some members of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, and other musicians throughout Iowa. Frank is motivated to promote live music, especially the Blues for new generations of Blues lovers.  Frank manages the Botanical Blues concert series where he has performed with many Blues musicians. Frank has recently completed 12 years of presenting this unique Blues performance event for the community.

Scotty & the Wingtips  (5:40-6:05) – Band

Scotty & the Wingtips was formed in September 1989 to host a jam at a local nightspot.  The Wingtips are in their 29th year and have played at just about every venue in Des Moines, plus weddings, festivals, private parties, and have opened for such people as Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks and Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater to name a few. The founder and leader of the band is drummer Scotty Hartung, who lays down that rock solid beat and tells the guys that he drives the bus and they all ride.  Mike Tyler is the rhythm, lead and slide guitar who’s been in the band since Day 1.  Also in the band since Day 1 is Ernie Terrell, who thumps that bass like no other. Utility man Dave Jenks, who plays sax, guitar, harmonica and has the swingingest voice of the bunch, has been with the band for 21 years.  Johnny Luna, on trumpet, flugelhorn and valve trombone, has been the brass and blowing those horns for about 23 years.  Johnny’s little brother, Dave Luna, just moved back from New Mexico to rejoin the band, which he and his brother started playing in about 1996, and these two brothers play together like bread and butter – movin’ and groovin’ and hoppin’ and boppin’ like a horn section should.  Rounding out the band on Hammond organ and electric piano is junior member Jeff Daniels, who has been in the band only 19 years.  The Wingtips’ easy-going, fun-loving style of blues is unique, energetic and just makes you want to smile.

Tina & Rob  (6:15-6:40) – Solo/Duo

Vocalist extraordinaire, Tina Haase Findlay, is a 30-year veteran of the Iowa and regional music scene.  From trailer courts to The Governor’s Mansion, from garage bands to symphonies, Tina has shared stages/opened for, among others: Robert Cray, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Johnny Rivers, Trampled Underfoot, and Bruce Katz. She gave a show stopping performance singing with Joanna Connor’s band at the 2017 Bowlful of Blues fest.  Tina is in The Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame, is a three-time Iowa Blues Challenge finalist, and in 2015, Tina and her husband, Brandon, won the Iowa solo/duo challenge.  Guitarist, Rob Lumbard, received his musical education in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa sitting in with the likes of Luther Allison, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, who played in the barrooms along Forest Avenue.  Rob has played on the same bill as The Band, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Leon Redbone and dozens of others.  Lumbard’s release, Blues In A Bottle, won the International Blues Foundation’s 2016 Best self-produced CD award. He’s in The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and is an honorary member of the Central Iowa Blues Society. Rob has participated in the Blues In The Schools program assisting Fruteland Jackson, and Chicago blues veteran Billy Branch.

Concreteslim  (6:50-7:15) – Solo/Duo

Concreteslim, is a singer/songwriter from Rock Island, Illinois. Returning from L.A. in 2009 he began playing in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri, at various venues, House Concerts, Festivals and Fundraisers, hosting Concrete 4 Cambridge in 2017 playing his original music with The Sidewalks and then The Finishers.  The last year Concreteslim has been featured on Mac 95, WQUD and KDHX St.louis, The Paula Sands Show and the upcoming PBS show State and Water.  He is in the studio now recording with his band their 3rd CD Turn Your Porch Light, with many of the songs being debuted at the Blues Challenge.

Other Brothers  (7:25-7:50) – Band

The Other Brothers are a rock & blues trio born and bred out of the Midwest.  Front man Eli Clark smokes on harmonica and guitar.  The red-hot rhythm is provided by Lorenzo Enos on bass and Jason Kadiwhompus on drums.  The band has spent the past year touring locally in support of their self-recorded debut, Rosetta.  Their latest studio effort, Born Out of Tune, is slated for release April 2018, followed by a regional tour.

Tom Buckmiller & Brian Schwager  (8:00-8:25) – Solo/Duo

Tom Buckmiller grew up in rural South Dakota and was a radio DJ at KWYR FM/AM in high school.  Now living in Waukee and working at Drake, Tom teaches in the School of Education and also teaches first year seminar called: Life in the Key of Em:  Learning lessons from the Blues. The class has produced two books featuring local metro blues musicians and fans.  The class takes field trips to Lefty’s on Wednesday to see the Butter Cow Blues Band perform to better understand the nuances of playing/listening to the blues. Tom plays guitar/sings with two local blues bands: Jimmy the Weasel and Tom Buckmiller and the Tone Tailors.  Brian Schwager grew up in Des Moines and currently lives in West Des Moines. Brian is a graduate of McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN.  Most recently Brian played lead guitar with the Casey Muessigmann Band (as seen on The Voice 2) and prior to that he played with Crawford County.  Brian is influenced by BB King, SRV, Walter Trout, Freddie King and Michael Bloomfield.

Who’s Been Talkin’  (8:35-9:00) – Solo/Duo

An Iowa Blues Hall of Fame and Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Billylee Janey is a guitarist, songwriter and performer who’s been compared to his own heroes: Clapton, Beck, Hendrix, even while his passionate love for music and creativity have given him his own unique style and personality. Billylee picked up his first guitar, a German Framus, during the British invasion, which shaped the direction of his future – the blues, jazz & rock.  He began recording in 1972 and his 1975 release with his blues-rock trio, Truth ‘N Janey, titled No Rest for the Wickedachieved near-cult status internationally, as well as being recognized in the Martin Popoff book, “The Collector’s Guide to Heavy Metal, Vol. I: The Seventies.”  Bands that Billylee has been a member of include: Driving Wheel Blues Band, Truth ‘N Janey, Enoch Smokey, Dennis McMurrin’s Demolition Band, The Janey’s (a Ma/Pa/Son trio), Billylee Janey Band, Blue Janey, Molly Nova & the Hawk, Ernie Peniston Band, Compact 3, and now he is joined by Cedar Rapids keyboard player Jeff Craft to form Who’s Been Talkin’. Jeff has collaborated with both Billylee and his son Bryce Janey many times and has been a support player for many groups in the CR area for 40 years.  He also serves currently as the Secretary for the Linn County Blues Society.

John-Paul Jones Group  (9:10-9:35) – Band

The John-Paul Jones Group, established in 1998, continuing the tradition started in 1965-1969. The John-Paul Jones Group specializes in HEAVY BLUES. This ain’t your Great-Grandfather’s blues, but it just may be your blues. If you like traditional blues you will enjoy the traditional songs and lyrics sung by the John-Paul Jones Group. If you like blues rock, then you will enjoy the modern jam band twists the John-Paul Jones Group puts on traditional songs. If you are a hard rock, heavy metal or similar music listener, you will like the high energy and excellent musicianship the John-Paul Jones Group puts into every performance. What are you waiting for? Come Get Some… Heavy Blues.  The members of the John-Paul Jones Group are John-Paul (Jp) Jones on guitar and vocals, Sally Henry on bass, Jesse Price on bass and synth and Steven Jones on drums. For more information visit johnpauljonesgroup.com

A couple Iowa Blues Challenge nuggets…
  • The following cities are represented at the 2018 IABC: Albia, Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Decorah, Des Moines, Fairfield, Ottumwa, Rock Island IL, Ryan, Waukee & West Des Moines, demonstrating the truly statewide reach of the program.
  • The 2017 Iowa Blues Challenge Solo/Duo champion, Kevin B.F. Burt of Coralville, went on to win the Solo/Duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January, as well as winning the Cigar Box Guitar award and the Lee Oskar Harmonica award – the first-ever clean sweep.  Kevin’s well-earned victory demonstrates two things that CIBS was already well aware of – that we have some pretty great blues talent right here in Iowa and that participation in the Iowa Blues Challenge has the ability to provide life-changing opportunities to our up-and-coming Iowa musicians.

Curtis Salgado
Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones

DOUBLE BILL! DOORS OPEN AT 6:00 // SHOW AT 7:00

CURTIS SALGADO — Award-winning soul, blues and R&B vocalist Curtis Salgado’s earth-shaking vocals and forceful harmonica playing have been devastating audiences around the world for over 30 years. Guitarist Alan Hager has been wowing fellow musicians from his hometown of Portland, Oregon and beyond for decades. Hager has been jamming with Salgado since 2003, and joined his band full-time in 2015. Together, the two blues fans and friends took time out of their busy touring schedule to record Rough Cut, a stripped-down album featuring a potent mix of newly written, timeless originals and carefully chosen blues covers. “We did it for the love of the music,” says Salgado. “This is where our hearts are. These are deep songs that we love to play.”

That love comes through loud and clear on Rough Cut. Produced by Salgado and Hager, the 13 songs on the album (including six originals) range from plaintive to playful. Recorded in one live unrehearsed take, the original I Will Not Surrender, with its haunting and sparse soundscape, showcases some of Hager’s strongest guitar work, and some of the most profoundly emotive vocals Salgado has ever laid down. The canine-lover’s anthem, I Want My Dog To Live Longer (The Greatest Wish), is already a huge fan favorite. Salgado’s soulful singing and Hager’s elegant slide guitar playing shine on Elmore James’ You Got To Move and Muddy Waters’ I Can’t Be Satisfied. “He’s the best player in the business, unlike anybody else,” Salgado says of Hager. “One reason I made this record was to show him off.”

Drawing influence from greats like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian and Robert Jr. Lockwood, Doug’s traditional taste and style are evident in his original music, with three recordings of primarily original tunes to his credit. Throughout his 20+ year career Doug has enjoyed touring and recording with many top blues artists, including Kim Wilson, Gary Primich, Lazy Lester, Alberta Adams, AC Reed and Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones to name a few; as well as with his own band featuring various artists such as Greg “Fingers” Taylor, Terry Hanck, Steve Guyger and Dennis Gruenling. Badass Blues Broads!

East meets West in the Midwest… killer bands and powerful women.
What a night! Meet the Badass Blues Broads. Check out some video ->

LISA MANN (Portland Oregon):
Originally from West Virginia, Mann’s vocals effortlessly straddle the line between the honey sweet warmth of the south, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from hard rock to rhythm and blues. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass guitar. Her bass grooves touch on the hallowed soil of soul greats James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt.
2016 Blues Music Award – Instrumentalist, Bass
2015 Blues Music Award – Instrumentalist, Bass
2015 Blues Blast Award – Sean Costello Rising Star
Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame

LAUREN MITCHELL (Sarasota FL):
“I miss Etta a little less when I hear Lauren sing.” Josh Sklair – Grammy Award Winner, Producer and Guitarist for Etta James
“A soul-stirring voice and an arresting presence” Tony Braunagel – Producer, Grammy and Blues Music Award Winner
“Mitchell’s powerful voice immediately punched me in the gut and shook me to the deepest part of my soul!” Blue Monday Monthly.

JENI GROUWS (Eastern Iowa):
Blues is storytelling, and Jeni Grouws, co-leader of the Avey/Grouws Band, will sing a story into life! Gary Eckhart of Blue Monday Monthly called Grouws “a rising star!” Declared the Iowa Blues Challenge Winners in 2017, the Avey/Grouws Band made it to the Semi Finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2018.

ANNIE MACK (Rochester, Minnesota):
What do you get when you combine blues, roots, gospel, country and soul? A powerful and eclectic mix that makes up the rich layering that is the essence of Annie Mack. With a powerful voice, strong presence and captivating storytelling ability Annie Mack is a force to be reckoned with. Following in the footsteps of the Blues Women before her, she makes a genuine connection with her audience. She upholds the tradition of “Testifyin” about the experiences of Life.

CINDY GRILL (Central Iowa):
Since January 2005, Hot Tamale & the Red Hots have been surprising blues music fans. To date, they have opened for such national acts as Kelley Hunt, Grinderswitch, Harper, and Dr. John, as well as performing at such events as the Bowlful of Blues festival and Rollin On The River festival. 2018 Blues In The Schools featuring Kevin BF Burt, Blues Educator

Well over seven hundred students were baptized into the blues during the week of April 23-27. Hoover and it’s feeder schools, Meredith middle School and elementary schools, Hillis, Monroe, Moore and Samuelson participated in Kevin BF Burt’s presentation. Several students participated either strumming along or singing the blues with Kevin.

The DMACC Ankeny Campus also got in a blues mood where Scott Davis’s Rock History and Jazz History classes were given a lesson on how the blues influenced and developed into these genres. As a BITS week ending recital, Kevin BF Burt performed at the Mills Civic Hy Vee Market Grille. Several teachers and students were in attendance.

Plans for the 2019 Blues In The Schools were being discussed with teachers and staff as each session wrapped up at all locations.

A huge Blues thank you to Mary Wolfe (volunteer), Scott Davis, Ryan Rowley, and Maureen Griffin for their support at the schools level. Also the support and sponsorship from the Des Moines Public Schools, Stoney Creek Inn, Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator, and Kelly Kretschmer, Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator.

Blues Education for The Next Generation

The Central Iowa Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools program for 2018 is being presented at Hoover High and its feeder schools with the main focus being five elementary schools, Monday, April 23rd through Friday, April 27th.

We are proud to announce Kevin “BF” Burt as our Blues In The Schools clinician. Kevin recently represented Iowa in the 34th International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee where he took a record-breaking three top prizes. In addition to winning first place in the Solo/Duo category, he also won the Lee Oskar Award for Best Harmonica Player and the Best Solo/Duo Guitarist.

Burt is recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators–an honor given to him by Iowa Governor Chet Culver in February of 2009. Kevin is a registered artist, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Burt plans to continue this work as well as his community work with children and the arts.

A huge Blues thank you to Scott Davis, Ryan Rowley, and Maureen Griffin for their support at the schools level. Also the support and sponsorship from the Des Moines Public Schools, Stoney Creek Inn, Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator, and Kelly Kretschmer, Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator.

Tax-deductible donations to support CIBS’ education programs can be made to the Carol Thomas Memorial Endowment Fund by clicking on the DONATE button in the right-hand column or mailing to:

The Bel Airs

Special Opening Performance by The Soul Searchers

Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, The Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock-n-roll sound influenced by the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash.

Performing together for more than 20 years, the Pruitt brothers’ harmony vocal style sets them apart in the contemporary music scene–leading one reviewer to refer to them as the “Everly Brothers of Blues”. David’s “big guitar” and Dick’s howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse.

SUNDAY – APR 22, 2018 @ 6:00PM
Lefty’s Live Music, 2307 University Ave, DM
Too Slim & the Taildraggers

Too Slim & the Taildraggers roared out of Spokane, Washington in 1986 like a man with his hair on fire. The virtuoso guitarist, passionate singer and poetic songwriter remains possessed to play the blues his way with blockbusting power and the talent to create timeless music like his life depended on it.

If it is possible to be a natural-born guitarist, Langford fits the description.” ~ Rick Allen, Vintage Guitar Magazine

2018 WBF Musician’s Swap Meet

On Saturday, February 10, 2018 Frank Strong hosted the first Musician’s Swap Meet at the CIBS Winter Blues Fest. The event took place in the Waterloo Room of the downtown Des Moines Marriott Hotel. The swap meet was open to musicians and those aspiring to become musicians. The equipment available for sale and trade included guitar amps, guitars, bass guitars, PA speakers, music CDs, and much, much more.

About 25 folks stopped by to shop and ask questions. We had six bass players stop by. The bass players outnumbered other musicians by far. Both local folks and out-of-towners visited the swap meet.

After the swap meet, Andy Cohen, the presenter at the Blues guitar workshop stopped by for an impromptu jam session.

Many thanks to John Lee Egan, a CIBS member from Huxley, who helped before, during, and after the swap meet. ~ Frank Strong
