Blues Education for The Next Generation

The Central Iowa Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools program for 2018 is being presented at Hoover High and its feeder schools with the main focus being five elementary schools, Monday, April 23rd through Friday, April 27th.

We are proud to announce Kevin “BF” Burt as our Blues In The Schools clinician. Kevin recently represented Iowa in the 34th International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee where he took a record-breaking three top prizes. In addition to winning first place in the Solo/Duo category, he also won the Lee Oskar Award for Best Harmonica Player and the Best Solo/Duo Guitarist.

Burt is recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators–an honor given to him by Iowa Governor Chet Culver in February of 2009. Kevin is a registered artist, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Burt plans to continue this work as well as his community work with children and the arts.

A huge Blues thank you to Scott Davis, Ryan Rowley, and Maureen Griffin for their support at the schools level. Also the support and sponsorship from the Des Moines Public Schools, Stoney Creek Inn, Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator, and Kelly Kretschmer, Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator.

Tax-deductible donations to support CIBS’ education programs can be made to the Carol Thomas Memorial Endowment Fund by clicking on the DONATE button in the right-hand column or mailing to:

The Bel Airs

Special Opening Performance by The Soul Searchers

Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, The Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock-n-roll sound influenced by the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash.

Performing together for more than 20 years, the Pruitt brothers’ harmony vocal style sets them apart in the contemporary music scene–leading one reviewer to refer to them as the “Everly Brothers of Blues”. David’s “big guitar” and Dick’s howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse.

SUNDAY – APR 22, 2018 @ 6:00PM
Lefty’s Live Music, 2307 University Ave, DM
Too Slim & the Taildraggers

Too Slim & the Taildraggers roared out of Spokane, Washington in 1986 like a man with his hair on fire. The virtuoso guitarist, passionate singer and poetic songwriter remains possessed to play the blues his way with blockbusting power and the talent to create timeless music like his life depended on it.

If it is possible to be a natural-born guitarist, Langford fits the description.” ~ Rick Allen, Vintage Guitar Magazine

2018 WBF Musician’s Swap Meet

On Saturday, February 10, 2018 Frank Strong hosted the first Musician’s Swap Meet at the CIBS Winter Blues Fest. The event took place in the Waterloo Room of the downtown Des Moines Marriott Hotel. The swap meet was open to musicians and those aspiring to become musicians. The equipment available for sale and trade included guitar amps, guitars, bass guitars, PA speakers, music CDs, and much, much more.

About 25 folks stopped by to shop and ask questions. We had six bass players stop by. The bass players outnumbered other musicians by far. Both local folks and out-of-towners visited the swap meet.

After the swap meet, Andy Cohen, the presenter at the Blues guitar workshop stopped by for an impromptu jam session.

Many thanks to John Lee Egan, a CIBS member from Huxley, who helped before, during, and after the swap meet. ~ Frank Strong

CIBS Blues Crier :: MARCH 2018

MARCH 2018

Upcoming Central Iowa Blues Society Events

Jensen is a solid guitarist, phrasing deftly with just enough macho to make the boys happy and just enough lyricism to make the girls swoon… not to mention he actually knows how to dress on stage.” — Rob Cullivan (Portland Tribune)

Most people are in for a shock the first time they experience a Jeff Jensen Band performance. It starts with the trio mixing an eccentric blend of soul, rock, and American roots music with a deep blues influence. Suddenly Jensen feels the spirit, transforming into a whirling dervish of sight & sound as he bounds across the stage, barely able to contain himself as he wrenches stark, biting six-string explosions from his guitar. His passion is there for all to see, a rare occurrence in these times of buttoned-down music-making. At first, the sheer emotional force he creates can be a bit overwhelming. Then you realize that all art is an expression of the soul, of the power of the life-giving force that created the universe. And Jeff feels it is his responsibility to make the effort to communicate his passion with each member of the audience every night. After all, music is art, and art is the physical form of emotion.

Feral blues guitar…non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge…his eloquence dazzles…he achieves pyrotechnics that rival early Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.” – Rolling Stone

Blues-rock guitar wizard, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis will celebrate the release of his powerful new CD, WINNING HAND, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, with a live performance on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Lefty’s Live Music in Des Moines. Since his Alligator debut 30 years ago, Tinsley Ellis has become a bona fide worldwide guitar hero. The Chicago Sun-Times says, “It’s hard to overstate the raw power of his music.” Armed with his signature molten licks, melodic riffs and rousing, intense solos, Ellis, as his legions of fans will attest, is among the blues world’s best loved, hardest working and most well-traveled statesmen.

Ellis unleashes a torrent of dazzling musicianship pitched between the exhilarating volatility of rock and roll and the passion of urban blues.” – Los Angeles Times

Carolyn Wonderland is the real deal! She’s an amazing guitar player. She whistled a solo. She even played the trumpet! And damn, can she sing.” – Los Angeles Times

A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time.

Carolyn grew up the child of a singer in a band and began playing her mother’s vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. She’s gone from being the teenage toast of her hometown Houston to sleeping in her van in Austin amid heaps of critical acclaim for fine recordings Alcohol & Salvation, Bloodless Revolution, and more recently, Miss Understood and Peace Meal.

Along with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she learned to play – trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel – Wonderland even throws in a whistling solo on occasion.

From appearances on PBS’s Austin City Limits to top slots at major festivals around the world, Wonderland’s live shows leave a trail of screaming fans in its wake.

A dollop of Janis Joplin, a slice of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a big load of soulful individuality… that’s Wonderland, a seething-hot Texas singer-guitarist. And she can write, too!” – Daniel Gewertz, Boston Herald

An expert channeler of old-time blueswomen.” – NPR

Eden Brent is much more than her signature boogie-woogie piano and juke-joint blues holler. She is a celebrated songwriter and dynamic performer, with numerous nominations and awards including eleven Blues Music Award nominations since 2009 and three BMA trophies. Her most recent Yellow Dog Records album, Jigsaw Heart was nominated for BMA Acoustic Album of the Year, continuing a streak of nominations for her last three albums.

A force to reckon with…sultry, hot and cool.” – Wall Street Journal

Iowa City blues musician Kevin B.F. Burt was the winner of the Solo/Duo competition at the 34th International Blues Challenge (IBC), presented by the Blues Foundation, on Saturday evening.  In addition, he won the Lee Oskar Best Harmonica award and the Cigar Box Guitar award for Most Promising Acoustic Act.  Kevin was among 235 bands & solo/duo acts from around the world entered into the 5 day event on Beale Street, which in addition to the IBC competition, also features an International Showcase, a Youth Showcase and the annual Keeping the Blues Alive awards.

Kevin got the opportunity to participate in the IBC by virtue of winning the Iowa Blues Challenge (IABC) Solo/Duo competition in September, presented by the Central Iowa Blues Society in Des Moines and co-sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Blues Society in Davenport, the South Skunk Blues Society in Newton and the Southeast Iowa Blues Society in Fairfield.  (In 2018 the Linn County Blues Society in Cedar Rapids will also be an IABC co-sponsor.)

This was Kevin’s second opportunity to participate in the IBC.  In 1995, he and his band the Blues Instigators represented the Central Iowa Blues Society at what was known then as the International Blues Talent Competition.

The Iowa entry in the Band category, the Avey Grouws Band – Jeni Grouws from Decorah and Chris Avey, Bryan West, Randy Leasman and Andrew Durham from the Quad Cities, advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated.

The Redwoods, a youth act from Omaha/Council Bluffs was sponsored by CIBS in the Youth Showcase.
