Badass Blues Broads!

East meets West in the Midwest… killer bands and powerful women.
What a night! Meet the Badass Blues Broads. Check out some video ->

LISA MANN (Portland Oregon):
Originally from West Virginia, Mann’s vocals effortlessly straddle the line between the honey sweet warmth of the south, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from hard rock to rhythm and blues. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass guitar. Her bass grooves touch on the hallowed soil of soul greats James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt.
2016 Blues Music Award – Instrumentalist, Bass
2015 Blues Music Award – Instrumentalist, Bass
2015 Blues Blast Award – Sean Costello Rising Star
Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame

LAUREN MITCHELL (Sarasota FL):
“I miss Etta a little less when I hear Lauren sing.” Josh Sklair – Grammy Award Winner, Producer and Guitarist for Etta James
“A soul-stirring voice and an arresting presence” Tony Braunagel – Producer, Grammy and Blues Music Award Winner
“Mitchell’s powerful voice immediately punched me in the gut and shook me to the deepest part of my soul!” Blue Monday Monthly.

JENI GROUWS (Eastern Iowa):
Blues is storytelling, and Jeni Grouws, co-leader of the Avey/Grouws Band, will sing a story into life! Gary Eckhart of Blue Monday Monthly called Grouws “a rising star!” Declared the Iowa Blues Challenge Winners in 2017, the Avey/Grouws Band made it to the Semi Finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2018.

ANNIE MACK (Rochester, Minnesota):
What do you get when you combine blues, roots, gospel, country and soul? A powerful and eclectic mix that makes up the rich layering that is the essence of Annie Mack. With a powerful voice, strong presence and captivating storytelling ability Annie Mack is a force to be reckoned with. Following in the footsteps of the Blues Women before her, she makes a genuine connection with her audience. She upholds the tradition of “Testifyin” about the experiences of Life.

CINDY GRILL (Central Iowa):
Since January 2005, Hot Tamale & the Red Hots have been surprising blues music fans. To date, they have opened for such national acts as Kelley Hunt, Grinderswitch, Harper, and Dr. John, as well as performing at such events as the Bowlful of Blues festival and Rollin On The River festival. The 2018 Iowa Blues Hall of Fame induction celebration was held Sunday, April 8th at Noce in downtown Des Moines. The event was once again sold out and a great crowd was on hand to take in the festivities. The inductees for the class of 2018 included Ardie Dean Strutzenburg, Jeff Taylor, Jay Sieleman, Vicki Price, and Scot Sutherland.

Sumpin doo, served as the Hall of Fame Band and the food was once again provided by the Flying Mango. There were over 20 current members of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in attendance.

In response to two consecutive sold-out events we are moving next years ceremony to the Rivercenter in downtown Des Moines. This venue will allow us additional seating but yet maintain the same atmosphere and great feel.

Save-the-date for the 2019 Iowa Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony — Sunday April 7th 2019. Tickets will go on sale in January 2019 and despite the larger venue we encourage everyone to get your tickets as soon as they are available.

Congratulations again to the 2018 inductees and thanks to everyone for making it an evening to remember.

2018 Blues In The Schools featuring Kevin BF Burt, Blues Educator

Well over seven hundred students were baptized into the blues during the week of April 23-27. Hoover and it’s feeder schools, Meredith middle School and elementary schools, Hillis, Monroe, Moore and Samuelson participated in Kevin BF Burt’s presentation. Several students participated either strumming along or singing the blues with Kevin.

The DMACC Ankeny Campus also got in a blues mood where Scott Davis’s Rock History and Jazz History classes were given a lesson on how the blues influenced and developed into these genres. As a BITS week ending recital, Kevin BF Burt performed at the Mills Civic Hy Vee Market Grille. Several teachers and students were in attendance.

Plans for the 2019 Blues In The Schools were being discussed with teachers and staff as each session wrapped up at all locations.

A huge Blues thank you to Mary Wolfe (volunteer), Scott Davis, Ryan Rowley, and Maureen Griffin for their support at the schools level. Also the support and sponsorship from the Des Moines Public Schools, Stoney Creek Inn, Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator, and Kelly Kretschmer, Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator.
