25th Winter Blues Fest Recap

It was Super Bowl Weekend AND it was a Super Blues Weekend. CIBS 25th Winter Blues Fest Anniversary weekend to be exact. You might have rooted for your favorite football team, but apparently a LOT of enthusiastic fans were rooting for the BLUES.

Your CIBS leadership team, with “Captain Scott Allen” at the helm just might have shed some joyful tears due to our extraordinary wins February 1 and February 2. Months of planning and media promotions by the CIBS Administrators, Talent & Research, Committee Chairs, Production, and other Volunteers proved it so worth the effort. Attendance, membership, and merchandise sales (including the Confluence Winter Blues Helles Lager commemorative beer) reached all time highs! How about the many business sponsorships that gave support to present a top shelf event?

But SO importantly, heartfelt appreciation to the CIBS members who volunteered at the event and helped us run a tight ship. What would we do without you? THANK YOU to all who love the music, performed the music, and supported the event.

GO TEAM.

~ Deb Bodson, CIBS Production Chair

We have established communication with the Waukee Community School District and are working with the Director of Community Education, Jeff Longman to see how the CIBS education program can fit into their curriculum.

What comes to mind when you hear the two words “music therapy”? Is it going out to hear live music or hanging at home with a bottle of wine or even a cigar with whiskey and a CD? What I am talking about here is a program called Guitars For Vets. Their slogan reads, “They endure sniper attacks, RPG’s and roadside bombs. Yet, the thing that saves their life is a guitar.” We have been in contact with Matt Lloyd, the Director of the Iowa chapter of Guitars For Vets. Veterans that sign up for this program get ten, 30-minute lessons. At the completion of these lessons, the Veteran graduates and gets to keep the guitar that he took the lessons with. I learned of this organization through my work with the Cincinnati Blues Society. They have a local musician that became an ambassador for their local chapter. Some of the Veterans that graduate get to perform as an opening act at some of their festivals. The Cincy Blues Society also holds a fundraiser that helps purchase tickets for Veterans to their events. www.guitars4vets.org

We are still in communication with Bert Lowery, Food Service General Manager of the Urbandale Hy-Vee. This is where we want to establish their Market Grille as the recital location for the Hoover High School/Ankeny DMACC BITS program. This Market Grille has a nice size patio area that they are considering for the event with moving indoors as an option in case of inclement weather. Bert Lowery is meeting with the store director and will be getting back to me in the near future. I have contacted the journalism department at the DMACC Ankeny Campus.  They had an enthusiastic response to covering Kevin Burt teaching the Blues at Scott Davis’s Rock History and Jazz History classes.

Thank you all for your continued support of this program!

Out of the Blues Kitchen

Lower temps outside means higher appetites! What better way to beat the winter blues than with meatloaf! Everyone has a favorite recipe, I am not going to tread on that sacred ground. But, I can offer some tips, tricks and twists. I like to use half beef and half pork. All meatloaves must have Worcestershire. Whether you use bread crumbs, saltines, or oatmeal as your binder, it is up to you. One thing that is unique to my recipe is horseradish. One tablespoon of horseradish per pound of meat. This actually does not interfere with the flavor profile but it enhances it. Always sauté any vegetables you put in your loaf. Why? Because I said so. Do not bake your loaf in a bread loaf pan. While baking, this stews the loaf and makes for a soggy bottom loaf. No one wants a stewed soggy bottomed loaf.

Cover a baking rack with foil and pierce holes in it. The holes will drain off any fats and juices. Make a football shaped loaf. You want to maximize the surface of the loaf to get more caramelization which equals more flavor. At this point you can either place this over a cookie sheet or cook it outside on your grill. Hmmm, smoked meatloaf? Stuff your meatloaf with anything. I have stuffed with jalapeño poppers or even do a bacon weave, or both!

For the mashed potatoes you can go with the standard butter/cream/salt/pepper. My take is a little bit different. Add equal parts of butter and cream cheese. Make sure these are at room temp before adding to potatoes. Using the whip attachment on your mixer, start off slow, scraping down sides and raise speed until the taters are creamy, silky smooth. For the gravy, you can use any drippings if you baked in the oven or bits that stuck to the foil. Always use a flour/butter roux. Never use a slurry of corn starch. That is a no-no.

More tips, tricks and twists HERE … Have fun, go cook somethin’!

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive
through
Celebration,
Preservation & Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
