LISA MANN (Portland Oregon): Originally from West Virginia, Mann’s vocals effortlessly straddle the line between the honey sweet warmth of the south, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from hard rock to rhythm and blues. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass guitar. Her bass grooves touch on the hallowed soil of soul greats James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt. 2015 & 2016 Blues Music Awards – Instrumentalist, Bass • 2015 Blues Blast Award – Sean Costello Rising Star • Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame

AVEY/GROUWS BAND (Eastern Iowa): Blues is storytelling, and Jeni Grouws, co-leader of the Avey/Grouws Band, will sing a story into life! Blue Monday Monthly called Grouws “a rising star!” Declared the Iowa Blues Challenge Winners in 2017, the Avey/Grouws Band made it to the Semi Finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2018.

Blues in the Schools 2019

Folded, spindled and mutilated. The 2019 Blues In The Schools sessions has come to an end. It has been a week of mostly smiles, a lot of laughs and a daily tear or three. This soul has been fed along with numerous school staff and eight hundred plus students. Thank you to the Des Moines Public Schools, Kelly Schnackenberg, Vanessa Howell, all of the principals and music directors and School staff that assisted. DMACC Ankeny Campus. Stoney Creek Inn, the downtown Des Moines Marriott, Don T-Bone Erickson and Gary Monte of KFMG, Doug Zimmerman of Zimm’s Food and Spirits.

And, to the CIBS Resident Educator, Kevin Burt. Thank you for taking the students on a journey through the Blues that they may carry with them wherever they may go.

Full report coming next newsletter! If you follow us on Facebook you were treated to LIVE video and photos throughout the week. You can still check them out here…

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive through
Celebration,
Preservation
& Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
