LISA MANN (Portland OR): Originally from West Virginia, Mann’s vocals effortlessly straddle the line between the honey sweet warmth of the south, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from hard rock to rhythm and blues. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass guitar. Her bass grooves touch on the hallowed soil of soul greats James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt. 2015 & 2016 Blues Music Awards Winner, Instrumentalist–Bass • 2015 Blues Blast Award–Sean Costello Rising Star • Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame ~ lisamannmusic.com

AVEY/GROUWS BAND (Eastern IA): Blues is storytelling, and Jeni Grouws, co-leader of the Avey/Grouws Band, will sing a story into life! Blue Monday Monthly called Grouws “a rising star!” Declared the Iowa Blues Challenge Winners in 2017, the Avey/Grouws Band made it to the Semi Finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2018. ~ aveygrouwsband.com

Iowa Blues Hall of Fame

The 2019 Iowa Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on Sunday, April 7th at the River Center Eventorium. As always, it was a memorable evening in a beautiful new venue. A crowd of well over 200 people were in attendance as the class of 2019–Frank Strong, Greg Sutherland, Jeff Banks, Kevin Burt and Janey Hooper–were inducted. The newest members of the Hall of Fame gave thrilling performances culminating in a beautiful video featuring Janey Hooper.

As always a big thank you to the volunteers who helped and a special thank you to our sponsors Flying Mango, Frame Works, Fat Tuesday Productions, VividPix & Design and the River Center. And another special thanks goes to Steve Vasquez for baking all those fabulous pies!

Pictures of the newest members will be unveiled soon. Please visit the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame at it’s home in the Hawkeye Elks Lodge 160, 1401 Walker Street in Des Moines.

Mark your calendars now! The 2020 induction ceremony of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame will be held on Sunday April 5th, 2020 at the River Center Eventorium.

R.I.P. Tom Gary

We are sad to report that Tom Gary, blues historian, founder of Central Iowa Blues Society and the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, died in his sleep sometime Sunday, May 5, 2019. Tom made so many lasting and significant contributions to our blues community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all his loved ones. May he rest in peace.

In recent years Tom hosted the Iowa Blues Showcase podcast. Lots of great memories there to check out.

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive through
Celebration,
Preservation
& Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
