Cannon is at the front rank of Chicago bluesmen. He creates wide-screen modern arrangements for wry, thoughtful songs, molding an ensemble sound that’s both tempestuous and scrupulously controlled.” – MOJO

Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon defies all expectations. The blistering guitarist, soulful vocalist, singular songwriter and city bus driver fuses his muscular, rock-inspired blues guitar playing with his original, keenly detailed slice-of-life songs, blazing his own blues trail. With the 2016 release of his Alligator Records debut, The Chicago Way, Cannon burst onto the international stage as one the most electrifying bluesmen to emerge from Chicago in decades. His live performances unfailingly earn him heaps of critical praise and hordes of wildly enthusiastic fans. Cannon has played major cities all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He recently performed for the first time in Japan, delighting and surprising audiences with one unforgettable gig after another. Now, with the release of The Preacher, The Politician Or The Pimp, Cannon builds upon the foundation he’s laid, creating and defining his vision of contemporary blues.

CIBS Blues Education News

Crossroads: A Journey with The Blues

The Des Moines Public Libraries wrapped up their 2019 Crossroads: A Journey with The Blues in grand fashion Saturday, October 5th. The day started off at Franklin Ave. Library with Malcolm Wells student harmonica giveaway and lesson. This was the biggest turnout of all the Crossroads sessions with over 55 people in attendance.

That same afternoon, the Forest Ave. Library had Heath Alan and Chad Elliott! This also was very well attended. Heath started off the session and Chad sat in on harmonica! As much as these two perform, it was great to hear them play together. The library staff traded off coming into both sessions and enjoyed it all thoroughly as did everyone that attended. There were even a few that made the trek over from Franklin and were still playing their student harmonicas!

A special Thank You to the Harding Hills and Eastside Hy-Vee’s for their generous donations of food and drink that was enjoyed by all three libraries this year! And an even more special Thank You to all of the artists that brought their best to this years sessions, Tina and Rob, Aaron Earl Short, Kevin Burt, Chad Elliott, Heath Alan, Scott Davis, Malcolm Wells and Bob Pace.

Thank you note from the library…

Just wanted to let you know that I received your kind message of support. Thank you so much. We’re grateful for all that you’ve done recently at the library to promote local music and the blues. After this week, it makes me reflect on how music helps to heal the soul. Thanks so much Steve! It was a great series for us! I do love the blues!

Guitars For Vets

We have just now topped 20 instruments donated! Remember, each one of these instruments could save the life of a Vet. More guitars are needed as the G4V Chapter Coordinator, Matt Loyd continues to reach out to Central Iowa. I was asked at the last general membership meeting about donations. You can go directly to their site https://guitars4vets.org/ for a monetary donation. There is actually a G4V student guitar kit that can be purchased through the local chapter. These student kits are $150-$200.  Some people have asked what types of guitars? Acoustic guitars are the guitar that is preferred. Of course any guitars will be accepted and used for lessons and the jams that they hold weekly. Also, any gear is helpful for their ongoing lessons.

Life After Blues On Grand

Life After Blues on Grand: Finding the Blues in Des Moines – This book is a project that was part of CIBS member, Dr. Tom Buckmiller’s, blues class at Drake University. The chapters were written by 18 and 19 year-old students who joined the class to learn about the blues. The students wrote chapters about some of the places in Des Moines that now, to some extent, carry the torch in place of Blues on Grand. Students interviewed owners, manager, local musicians, and local fans to get a sense for what each place was about and describe where one might…find the blues in Des Moines.

We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
