Blues Music Education News
Blues In The Schools 2020
The Blues In The Schools program kicked off it’s 2020 season at the Westminster Preschool on February 17th. The High Crest (Kat Darling and Aaron Earl Short) brought their country/ folk blues to the “wee ones”. Friday, February 21st, Iowa Blues Hall of Fame member “Freight Train” Frank Strong brought his railroad blues to the “wee ones”.
All in all, the two BITS sessions brought Blues Music Education to about 50 preschoolers. There are a variety of musical instruments throughout the classroom area. The teachers have been teaching the students all about Blues music leading up to these presentations.
We are happy to announce the addition of Ruby Van Meter school to the BITS program. On Monday, April 6th, 1:30pm-3:00pm, Aaron Earl Short will be bringing a performance with participation style presentation.
The Hoover 2020 Blues In The Schools is Monday, April 20th through Friday, April 24th at Hoover High, Meredith Middle and Moore, Monroe and Samuelson Elementary schools. This is our fourth year presenting Blues music education for the next generation. CIBS Resident Educator and international award winner Kevin Burt is returning to “baptize into the blues” over one thousand students throughout the week. Not only are the teachers and their staff excited for this event, the Principals of each school are very much involved also. The DMACC Ankeny Campus will also get a a good dose of the Blues at Scott Davis’ Music History and Rock History classes. Gary Monte of KFMG will be interviewing Kevin Burt sometime during that week as well. Kevin Burt will wrap up the week with a show on Friday, April 24th, site TBD.
Thank you to Kit Lancaster for the photos.

Guitars For Vets
More instruments are needed for this great program. Acoustic guitars are preferred, but any and all instruments and gear are welcome. Dewey Cantrell has completed the VA orientation and is a Guitars For Vets Ambassador. This makes him eligible to teach guitar to Veterans that are “prescribed” the G4V program. Upon completing ten 30-minute lessons, the National Guitars For Vets awards the Vet a new acoustic guitar with case and accessories.
If you have or know of someone that has an acoustic guitar that is collecting dust, contact Steve Vasquez at education@cibs.org or text at 515-664-4430.
