The Bel Airs
Special Opening Performance by The Soul Searchers
Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, The Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock-n-roll sound influenced by the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash.
Performing together for more than 20 years, the Pruitt brothers’ harmony vocal style sets them apart in the contemporary music scene–leading one reviewer to refer to them as the “Everly Brothers of Blues”. David’s “big guitar” and Dick’s howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse.

Too Slim & the Taildraggers
Too Slim & the Taildraggers roared out of Spokane, Washington in 1986 like a man with his hair on fire. The virtuoso guitarist, passionate singer and poetic songwriter remains possessed to play the blues his way with blockbusting power and the talent to create timeless music like his life depended on it.
If it is possible to be a natural-born guitarist, Langford fits the description.” ~ Rick Allen, Vintage Guitar Magazine

The Central Iowa Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools program for 2018 is being presented at Hoover High and its feeder schools with the main focus being five elementary schools – Monday, April 23rd through Friday, April 27th.
We are proud to announce Kevin “BF” Burt as our Blues In The Schools clinician. Kevin recently represented Iowa in the 34th International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee where he took a record-breaking three top prizes. In addition to winning first place in the Solo/Duo category, he also won the Lee Oskar Award for Best Harmonica Player and the Best Solo/Duo Guitarist.
Burt is recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators–an honor given to him by Iowa Governor Chet Culver in February of 2009. Kevin is a registered artist and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Burt plans to continue this work as well as his community work with children and the arts.
A huge Blues thank you to Scott Davis, Ryan Rowley, and Maureen Griffin for their support at the schools level. Also the support and sponsorship from the Des Moines Public Schools, Stoney Creek Inn, Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator, and Kelly Kretschmer, Fine and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator.
Tax-deductible donations to support CIBS education programs can be made online at www.cibs.org or by mailing a check to: Central Iowa Blues Society, PO Box 13016, Des Moines, IA 50310.

2018 WBF Musician’s Swap Meet
On Saturday, February 10, 2018 Frank Strong hosted the first Musician’s Swap Meet at the CIBS Winter Blues Fest. The event took place in the Waterloo Room of the downtown Des Moines Marriott Hotel. The swap meet was open to musicians and those aspiring to become musicians. The equipment available for sale and trade included guitar amps, guitars, bass guitars, PA speakers, music CDs, and much, much more.
About 25 folks stopped by to shop and ask questions. We had six bass players stop by. The bass players outnumbered other musicians by far. Both local folks and out-of-towners visited the swap meet.
After the swap meet, Andy Cohen, the presenter at the Blues guitar workshop stopped by for an impromptu jam session.
Many thanks to John Lee Egan, a CIBS member from Huxley, who helped before, during, and after the swap meet. ~ Frank Strong
