Grand Marquis

DOORS AT 7PM // SHOW AT 8PM
Steeped in the musical tradition of Kansas City, Grand Marquis plays American Roots, Blues and Prohibition-Era Jazz. Formed in 1998, Grand Marquis has become solidly rooted in the Kansas City music scene as one of the hardest-working bands in the region, playing over 100 shows per year! The group has performed from coast to coast, released seven albums, including a 7: 45 RPM vinyl record/cd combo recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis. The Grand Marquis are consistently finding themselves in high demand. Learn more about Grand Marquis at www.grandmarquis.net.

SUNDAY – OCT 14, 2018 @ 6:00PM
Hawkeye Elks Lodge, 1401 Walker St, Des Moines, IA
Halfway to Hall of Fame Concert & Jam

DOORS AT 5PM // SHOW AT 6PM — $15 Non-members ($10 for CIBS or Elks Members). The first ever IBHOF Halfway to Hall of Fame Concert & Jam. This event was organized to showcase current Iowa Blues Hall of Fame inductees at a halfway mark to the next induction ceremony.

We will also be celebrating an updated Iowa Blues Hall of Fame exhibit!  The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame exhibit was recently relocated to a prominent location within the Hawkeye Elks Lodge, with improved lighting and a new, distinctive sign.

Currently home to 69 members, the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and originally housed at Blues on Grand until its closing in 2010. The exhibit was rededicated in its new home at the Hawkeye Elks Lodge in September 2014.  New inductees are selected periodically by the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame committee and honored at a celebratory awards ceremony.

The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, its mission to recognize, honor and celebrate Iowa Blues heritage, has gone through a rebirth of sorts since languishing after the closure of the popular Blues on Grand.  The induction awards ceremony has steadily grown in recent years with multiple sell-outs, prompting a move to River Center Eventorium for more event space in 2019. The current upgrade gives the exhibit a clean, professional look worthy of a hall of fame. The Hawkeye Elks Lodge is open to the public and your visit is welcomed!

SUNDAY – OCT 21, 2018 @ 7:00PM
Lefty’s Live Music, 2307 University Ave, DM
Blues Caravan • Zito • Venable • Allison

DOORS AT 6PM // SHOW AT 7PM
This is no ordinary club tour… this is Ruf Records Blues Caravan 2018 featuring Bernard Allison, Mike Zito, and Vanja Sky! If you’ve followed Ruf’s rolling revue since it started life in 2005, you already know that these shows are must-see events, throwing together three stellar artists on one bill – then letting the chemistry do the rest.

Traditionally, the Blues Caravan lineup has showcased the label’s breaking talent giving fans a chance to catch the blues titans of tomorrow before they go ‘BOOM’. But in 2018, it’s time to mix things up. On this year’s Blues Caravan, you’ll not only find one young gun with a dazzling career ahead of her, but also two heavyweights with a sky-high reputation.

Ruf’s tireless dedication to the blues means it hunts far beyond borders for its new signings – and the label has struck gold with Lone Star State Powerhouse Ally Venable. Ally Venable, started singing at an early age in church and then in recent years picked up the guitar and found her passion establishing herself as a Texas Blues Guitar Slinger.

Some surnames command instant respect on the blues scene. As the son of the mighty Luther Allison – the late Chicago blues titan who was Ruf’s first signing back in 1994 – Bernard Allison has added to the family legend and carved out his own mythology as a world-class songwriter and performer. For this year’s Blues Caravan, he’ll be drawing on an acclaimed back catalogue that includes 1997’s US debut Keepin’ The Blues Alive and 2000’s classic Born With The Blues, and slipping between genres as only a master can. “I’m looking forward to being a part of the Caravan,” says Bernard. “My show is all about sharing my musical talent and presenting different styles like blues, rock and funk. There’ll be lots of energy, because I feed off of my fans and love interacting with them on and off stage. You can expect a fun time – the Allison way!”

If you’re remotely serious about modern blues, you’ll have followed the twists and turns of Mike Zito’s fascinating career. The Missouri-born bandleader overcame his crippling early addictions to become one of modern America’s sharpest songwriters, and few artists have written with such stark eloquence as he did on 2011’s Greyhound album. In 2012, Mike threw us a curveball, lining up alongside Devon Allman and Cyril Neville as a key member of Royal Southern Brotherhood – and went on to stay with the supergroup for two critically feted albums. But the call of his own muse was too strong, and in 2014, Mike burst straight back into his solo career with Keep Coming Back and Make Blues Not War. “I have long wanted to join the Blues Caravan and run away, so I’m excited,” he says. “My shows are energetic and passionate: I try hard to give everything I’ve got and make every note count. You can expect rocking blues guitar, with a dose of soul vocals, and a mix of my best songs.”

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive
through
Celebration,
Preservation & Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
