Winter Blues Fest Afternoon Extra! FREE Guitar Workshop with Doug Deming in the Des Moines Room from 1-3 PM. Everyone is welcome!

FROM DOUG: the workshop will be lecture with examples and we will be focusing on the guitar’s roll in a swing blues format (rhythm and soloing). You are welcome to bring a guitar to work on examples together but there won’t be amps provided.

The Central Iowa Blues Society partnered with Confluence Brewing Company to brew a special beer to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Winter Blues Fest. This simple but elegant “bright” lager is hand crafted with floor-malted Bohemian Pilsner malt, German noble hops, and lager yeast for a crisp refreshing flavor. Winter Blues Helles Lager will be available at the fest as well as the brewery and participating retail outlets. Salute!

Thank You to the 25th Winter Blues Fest Sponsors!

35th International Blues Challenge

Tina & Rob (solo/duo) and Scotty & the Wingtips (band) will heading to Memphis this week to represent Iowa at the 2019 International Blues Challenge! Wishing them all safe travels, best of luck, and most of all have a blast on Beale! A few CIBS members will be making the trip and hopefully be checking in with us all on social media for updates. You can catch both acts at the 25th Winter Blues Fest!

Blues In The Schools

Do you want good news first or the good news? There seems to be nothing but good news for our Blues In The Schools (BITS) program!

We are returning to the Forest Avenue Library. Thank you to Dana Smith and Nikki Hayter for reaching out to us. CIBS will be organizing a four session Blues education series this year. These sessions will include performances with story telling, the origins of blues history with blues videos and participation with a harmonica giveaway and lessons. It has been too long since we have partnered with them. We are looking forward to working with them and possibly expanding to other branches of the Des Moines Public Libraries. Since we are expanding the program outside the school system we will be renaming BITS.

The Des Moines Public Schools BITS program will be at at Hoover and it’s feeder schools (Meredith middle school, Hillis, Moore, Samuelson and Monroe elementary schools) Monday, April 22nd to Friday, April 26th this year. Returning to take on this task is our Resident Educator, Kevin Burt. Nearly all of the organizing of this has been completed! Our DMPS Community Partnership and insurance has been renewed. As of right now, all schools have confirmed their scheduled dates and times. What’s exciting about this is that a lot of the Principals were first to respond! That speaks volumes of the support for Blues music education! A huge Blues thank you to DMPS Kelly Schnackenberg, Performing Arts Coordinator and Vanessa Howell, Community Partnership Coordinator. DMPS contributes $1500 to BITS every year. Thank you also to Stoney Creek Inn and the downtown Marriott for their continued support!

Des Moines Area Community College Ankeny Campus is also set again for two sessions of Scott Davis’ music classes on Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday, April 23rd. Kevin Burt is also taking these gigs.

We are also working with the Urbandale Hy-Vee to locate the Hoover BITS/DMACC recital featuring Kevin Burt at their Market Grille on Friday, April 26th. Confidence is high that this will become an annual event and that they will become a supporting partner for BITS!

Out of the Blues Kitchen

Hello everyone! I am back with Out of the Blues Kitchen. Let’s have some fun with food, drink and music. Check in every month to see something new along with some of the old favorites. Once spring arrives watch my take on from the garden to the pantry to the table.

Sometimes ya just gotta have the simple things in life! But, what’s not so simple with these? Sure, it looks like tomato soup and grilled cheese. Well, duh, it is. One of the sandwiches has butter, the other I used mayo and basil. Try something different like using mayo with spice or herbs that complement the meal. And the cheese? Sure, you can use Velveeta or American cheese. (Factoid – the difference between white and yellow American is a dye known as achiote or sometimes egg shade.) Get crazy and get Brie, Swiss and cheddar! But hey, wait a minute! What about the bread!? Sure, go for cottage bread like we did tonight, or go artisan! Try sourdough or a good hearty rye! Garnish with your favorite chips…Cheetos, Fritos, etc. Mix it up–have fun! Go cook somethin’!

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive
through
Celebration,
Preservation & Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
