JULY 2019

UPCOMING CENTRAL IOWA BLUES SOCIETY EVENTS

SUNDAY – JUL 21, 2019 @ 6:00PM
James Harman / Bruce Katz
Noce, 1326 Walnut St., Des Moines, IA

DOUBLE BILL SHOW! Doors at 5PM / Show at 6PM – $25
(CIBS Members receive a $5 rebate at the door)

James Harman has been singing the blues, blowing harp, leading bands, burning up the road and penning thought-provoking songs five-plus decades and then some. He is rightfully recognized as one of the Godfathers of the Southern California scene. Harman was born and raised in Anniston, Alabama-quickly picked up on the black blues and soul music being played on juke boxes and the radio. He sang in the church choir until age 16 when his family moved to Panama City Florida, where he found himself surrounded by like-minded blues lovers. Wearing a fake moustache, young James slipped into a still segregated black nightclub to see Little Junior Parker’s show. He was totally overtaken by the blues and soon became a regular, known as “That boy who sings like a man” by patrons.

Bruce Katz’s resume reads like a who’s who of blues and blues-rock. Playing piano and Hammond B3 organ, Katz has toured and recorded with the Greg Allman Band, Delbert McClinton, Maria Muldaur, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, among numerous others. While blues remains his core influence, Katz’s music occupies a unique space where blues, soul-jazz, jam-band rock, and all aspects of Americana collide into a style of original music all his own. Bruce Katz is a four time (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015) Blues Music Award Nominee.

“He can play jazz, blues, Bach, anything. Man he’s a heavy!” ~ Gregg Allman

SATURDAY – JUL 27, 2019 @ 8:00PM
Nikki Hill
Lefty’s Live Music, 2307 University Ave, DM

Doors at 7PM / Show at 8PM – $20
(CIBS Members receive a $5 rebate a the door)

Raised in the church choir and steeped in R&B and garage rock rumble, Nikki Hill is a spitfire with the soul-drenched voice of Etta James and the tattooed, beehived-hair aura of Cramps’ guitarist Poison Ivy. ‘Heavy Hearts, Hard Fists’ is a showcase for Nikki’s unfettered versatility, whether it’s the debauched bluster of “Struttin'”, the Stonesy barn-burning blues of “(Let Me Tell You ‘Bout) LUV”, or the touching soul ballad “Nothin’ With You”.

The response has been ecstatic, and now the band tours the globe relentlessly, stunning audiences with their muscular sound, Nikki’s inimitable charisma and backed by her rockin’ band – guitarist Matt Hill, guitarist Laura Chavez, bassist Nick Gaitan, and drummer Marty Dodson.

“If Tina Turner and Little Richard had a daughter and raised
her with the help of uncles James Brown and Chuck Berry,
she’d be like Nikki Hill.” – Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Steve’s Blues Food

Graziano Bacon Bomb

Summertime grill smoke time is here! These “bombs” are a bit different than the rest. Take 3 lbs Graziano’s sausage, 2-8oz pkgs cream cheese, 1-1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 4 jalapeño peppers, seeded and fine diced, 1-1/2 lb thick sliced bacon.

  • Mix all cream cheese, sharp cheddar, jalapeños
  • Divide the Graziano’s sausage into 8 portions
  • Flatten these and fill with cream cheese mix
  • Close these up to form a ball
  • Lay out bacon in an X and place Graziano cheese ball. Wrap bacon around the ball
  • Grill with applewood chips for about 45 minutes or until sausage is 165 degrees
  • Place in broiler to crisp bacon

About CIBS

Keeping the Blues Alive through
Celebration,
Preservation
& Education!

The Central Iowa Blues Society was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1992 by 200 blues lovers. Our mission is to keep the blues alive through celebration, preservation, and education. We endeavor to increase awareness of and appreciation for blues music by providing a network of association for blues enthusiasts. We recognize and honor our Iowa blues heritage through the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame program. We celebrate blues performance by promoting numerous concerts throughout the year including the Winter Blues Fest and the Iowa Blues Challenge. We strive to educate and ensure the future of the blues through Blues in the Schools.

Central Iowa Blues Society received The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents the Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Blues around the world.
